ℙ𝕠𝕤𝕥-𝕀𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨 𝔽𝕠𝕝𝕝𝕠𝕨-𝕦𝕡 𝕥𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝔼𝕟𝕔𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕖𝕤 𝔼𝕞𝕡𝕝𝕠𝕪𝕖𝕣𝕤 𝕥𝕠 𝕂𝕖𝕖𝕡 𝕚𝕟 𝕋𝕠𝕦𝕔𝕙 relieves the stress of uncertainty. It feels good to take action confident that you are making the right moves to help yourself and not allowing a corporate recruiting process to control your future personal and professional life.
Recently a colleague and resume expert @JessicaHernandez offered suggestions for post-interview follow-up. Below I’ve customized these recommendations, especially for very senior-level executives to promote their candidacy and close the deal faster. The senior-level executive action steps are written in [brackets.] What have you found to be effective for keeping in touch with employers which has improved communication following an interview?
1) Write a thank you
2) Don’t stop actively job searching; keep up the same pace until you have a written offer or have started a new job and will be staying for a while [See new job leads via one-on-one networking.]
3) Conduct salary [company, industry, current news] research
4) [Pursue new knowledge or skills needed which has surfaced during interviews or pursue additional professional interests to strengthen qualifications and enhance credentials}
For senior-level executives, I strongly suggest adding
A) Write and publish an article or presentation applicable to this opportunity that can be repurposed as a work sample credential on LinkedIn or submitted to a professional organization or presented at an internal meeting
B) Circle back to networking contacts ( especially the person who helped you get the interview!,) remark about this and other target companies or career opportunities or recent accomplishments to say top of mind and attract more leads/find out how you can support your network
C) Create a follow-up on the calendar marking 10 days post-interview to evaluate if you should get in touch if you did not get a reply to your thank you message.

— if there was enough attraction to your background to warrant an interview invitation, they have expressed interest in getting to know you and exploring where you fit on the team. If your skills during the interview did not further your candidacy, you should attempt to learn more and offer trade-off skills, credentials, contacts, etc. that were not expected but strengthen your overall qualifications. This may be the time to talk about a different role within the organization especially if you thought your meeting went well and there was good interpersonal chemistry.
D) If you got along especially with anyone you met during the interviewing process, keep in touch and invite them to connect via LinkedIn. Initiate another one-to-one contact by sending them a link to a person or information, asking a question, wishing good luck on a launch or promotion or happy birthday, etc. averaging about once a month. DON’T GIVE UP!!! Lots of things beyond your control can stall progress towards an offer.
E) Be consistent and demonstrate you are reliable by keeping in touch with everyone you met using a variety of channels and different always attractive messaging UNTIL you are told in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS to “SCRAM SAM!!”
ADDENDUM It’s legitimate for job seekers to hedge their bets similar in intent to how employers often stretch out giving interviewed candidates a search progress update. Unpredictability is part of most modern recruiting practices that almost every job seeker experiences. It’s coping successfully with this uncertainty What separates winners from losers is how well they cope with uncertainty and exert their influence during the post-interview period. Only those who remain as an active player in the recruiting game, are proactive and no reactive to employer engagement, maintain a positive image and stay visible and are accessible to employers using the appropriate communication channels are positioning themselves to win a job offer. Be a constant on the employer’s radar, continue to prove your sincere interest and show relevant knowledge by sharing achievements and demonstrating thought leadership. In today’s hyperconnected world, out of sight is out of mind.
